Dexter adopted

A NEW JOURNEY BEGINS…

Check out our beloved Dexter.. ADOPTED!!! Dexter has been with SPOT since June of 2013. Dexter was relinquished by his owner, to be euthanized, because she could not afford his medical treatment. After eight years in a loving home, this lovely dog was abandoned through no fault of his own and was in serious need of veterinary care. The shelter could not address his multiple conditions, so SPOT was contacted. We said yes and got him the veterinary attention he deserved…

He now has a loving family to spend the rest of his days with! They just updated us with this..”Just wanted to let you know that Dexter is settling in. He gobbled up his dinner and seems to be feeling content now. He has his new tag and another bed. We put the bed you brought with him in Mom’s room so he has his choice of places to sleep. He is going to be showered with love and attention. Thank you both for making my Mom so happy with the perfect dog for her!”

Dexter is on a new journey and we are so excited for him and his new family! Way to go Dexter.. you made it!!!

Dexter.. August 11, 2013

Dexter had X-rays taken and he has a large boney mass in his spine near his pelvis, causing pain and possible nerve damage. If he doesn’t respond to pain meds within the next few days, we will do further testing for bone cancer. Dexter says “I don’t feel so good, but I love my foster mom and I am eating well and gaining weight!” We need good thoughts for our li’l Dexter.. So help him if you can!

Dexter.. 45 days after rescue!!

Dexter update! He looks great, he is gaining weight, his fur is thick and shiny, not brittle and flaky like it was after rescue! He is one happy boy! He especially enjoys his spa treatments with his foster mom!!

Dexter.. One month after rescue!!

Dexter foster1Yay..I have a foster home!!! One month ago, Dexter was relinquished by his owner, to be euthanized, because she could not afford his medical treatment. After eight years in a loving home, this lovely dog was abandoned through no fault of his own. He had a softball sized mass on his rear leg that turned out to be a Mast Cell Tumor (malignant). The vet removed it and it looks like they got it all, so it’s really a wait & see for now. He is now resting and having the time of his life in his new foster home!!! We can’t thank our fosters enough for giving this cutie a place to stay while he waits for his forever home.

Dexter.. Two weeks after rescue!!

Dexter 6_30Today, Dexter moved from the animal hospital to Dog Dayz boarding. Last week he had his surgery to remove his tumor. His blood work & tumor analysis came back: Blood work looked good, although his thyroid is low, but that could be caused by stress, so we will most likely do a thyroid test in 30-60 days. Lab results on his softball sized mass, it was a Mast Cell Tumor (malignant). Looks like they got it all, so it’s really a wait & see for now. You have to meet this handsome boy… he is so happy!!

One week after rescue!!

Dexter’s Fundraising Challenge was met! A kind and generous friend of SPOT offered to match, dollar for dollar, up to $500, to pay for Dexter’s veterinary care and boarding. YOU DID IT! You, friends of SPOT, stepped up to the plate and gave so that our boy could be saved.

He has already had his tumor removed, the biopsy is due back any day (fingers crossed for no malignancy), his teeth have been cleaned, he’s on antibiotics, got treatment for his dry, itchy skin, and is on the road to recovery.

He’s still in boarding at the vet–and we would love to find a foster home for him NOW!
It’s best if the home is in North County, so that we can continue his treatment here…Can he stay with you?

Dexter.. Day One after rescue!!

Dexter on his way to the car (AM I REALLY LEAVING??) Smiling in the crate, so happy to be leaving the shelter!
dexter heading to the vet
An overview shot of his current condition (my mom turned me in to be euth cause she couldn’t afford to take care of my medical needs…guess she didn’t take good care of me at all – I am very thin, with brittle fur, sores on my elbows, and a dirty, flakey coat).
And finally, we arrived at the animal hospital! Dexter will be spending a few days to get a full medical workup so SPOT can determine the best way to get him healthy and into a loving, FOREVER home!

Help us save Dexter

Dexter was relinquished by his owner, to be euthanized, because she could not afford his medical treatment. After eight years in a loving home, this lovely dog was abandoned through no fault of his own and is now in serious need of veterinary care. The shelter could not address his multiple conditions, so SPOT was contacted. We said yes–and very soon we will be taking in this sweet eight year old—and getting him the veterinary attention he deserves.

What we know now is that Dexter is 38 pounds (and underweight). He has a slight heart murmur, and needs dental work. The most serious condition is a baseball-sized mass on his rear leg. This will be biopsied at the same time we neuter Dexter—and then we’ll be able to get a plan of treatment together for this kind and gentle dog.

But it will be expensive. Our vet has estimated that we could have bills of up to $1,000 for biopsy, blood panel, possible teeth extractions and X-rays or echo cardiograms.

We want to help this dog. Can you help us?

To help with Dexter’s medical bills, just click on the “yellow” donate button. Please be sure to specify “For Dexter” in the comments section. Together, we can save Dexter’s life.

We appreciate your support to Dexter and SPOT Rescue.
